I am designing a large chimney box coming through a roof. The wood-frame box is to have a veneer of ledge stone, and I wish to use real stone, to match the wainscot siding on the house below. The wood frame box can have structural post support clear down to the foundation below. A steel insert seethrough fireplace will have a stack going up through the middle. For a 6' maximum veneer height of 6" stone (4 to 6 actually), what size shelf angle, bolted with what size bolts at what spacing, should I have?

There aren't many engineers on the site.. you may be able to get a "here's what my experience tells me". I would ask a local engineer.

The weight of the stone veneer is the issue. I have built a similar structure( for a large cupola base), but I have used
thin stones cut down to 1" thick from full stones.
The thin stone installation needs no foundation and
can be applied over 30# felt paper and diamond mesh nailed with roofing nails and wrapped on corners. Visit Halquist.com they have a demonstration video for installing thin stones.

We did something similar with 1 1/2" veneer stone and hardibacker and mortar. Really very easy.
