Hi,
Is it realistic for me to pour the footings, stems, and slab for a 30X30 garage? I live up north and need a 4 ft frost wall. My neighbor runs an excavator for a living and said he would be glad to dig it for me. I don't mind the hard work, or renting equipment. I just wanted to know if mixing, pouring, leveling, etc. is realistic to do myself. Most of the concrete contractors are giving me high quotes, since they are almost all booked for the summer. I was also wondering how much it will cost to do it myself?
Thanks for the help.

For the footings and stemwalls - it can be done on your own time. The slab is the only thing that may need a little more experience with finishing. Read some of that articles in the Concrete (http://www.construction-resource.com/concrete-articles.php) section of this site. You can get a rough cost of materials if it was bid out by using the Concrete Calculator (http://www.construction-resource.com/foundation.php) on this site. Roughly would come out to around 2500 with forms, bracing, concrete, and rebar for the foundation. And around 1100 for the slab material. Assuming average of $65/cy for concrete.

I should also add - you would be much better off if you ordered your concrete from a local concrete supplier. 14 yards for the stemwalls will take forever to mix and you will end up with too many cold seams.

I aggree with Rich, order the concrete delivered. As far as the rest goes, you could manage it yourself although I would recommend that you have some professional help putting a finish on the concrete floor. Renting a power trowel is one thing, using it properly is another. And you only get one shot at it.
