How to install cement board?

Gents,

I am installing some cement board before a tiling project. The floor is over a crawl space with joists and plywood. I am guessing that the cememt board is installed after the cabinets and not underneath of them, correct? Also does the cement board have to be butted up with the floor joists or can the ends of the cement board be secured not on a joist?

As long as you have a good subfloor the cement board can be screwed wherever you need to. I put the cement board under my cabinets but the tile at stopped at the edge.
