We're building our first house and I went in for a look today. I saw where they are putting the kitchen sink they cut the beams almost all the way to make room for the drain pipes. They did this at a few other places. Here is a pic of the one in the kitchen. Is this common or even safe? I was afraid of the integrity of the beam.

Thanks for your input.

Wall studs? And that's a floor on the right end of the photo? How deep are the notches? 25% depth of stud is permitted to be notched out.

Looks like 2x4 framing. If that is the case, there is no way to avoid cutting studs like that. Usually plumbing walls are usually framed with 2x6s or staggered 2x4s to allow enough space for piping runs. If the walls are non-loadbearing, it may be workable but it is not good practice.

Once you cut the stud that much there is no integrity left. As mentioned above the framing for the wall is incorrect and should have been larger or a chase built. Unfortunately this happens a lot, make sure they put a plate on each side of the stud to protect the pipe. Furthermore if this is an exterior wall the drain pipes could have been run differently.
