Hello,

I'm new. :D

I am beginning to plan a patio extension and would like to cover it. I have been considering large Cedar Beams (8"X8") but I'm also considering Pressure Treated Lumber (more likely--when stained it looks close to my Cedar fence--and costs a lot less).

It will measure 20' X 30'. I have been planning to use three trusses sitting on six Posts. 6:12 (?) Pitch shingled Roof.

Should I buy existing trusses or build these myself on site?

Do people sell beam trusses (not regular framing truss)?

Who should I talk to?

Is 8X8 acceptable for a 20" wide span if I set the posts in about 2 feet on each side, so the real loaded span would only be 16" across?

Does anyone sell those large black iron plates that join the beams with bolts (I've been looking everyhwere) ?

See if there are any timber frame manufacturers in your area. They would be able to design and construct the components for you to assemble on site. I did a few chalet style homes with exposed 3x12 roof timbers. We used 3/8" structural steel plate and carriage bolts and painted them all flat black.
