The railing around my deck is going to consist of 8x8 cinder-block posts. These posts will be covered with cultured stone (similar to the bar/grill in my other question)

Question: As these posts need to support a 200# lateral force (s do all deck railings) I'm looking for ideas to structurally tie the cinder blocks to my deck. Also wondering if THESE need to filled with Cement or mortar/rebar???

My thoughts: 8x8 blocks, mortared together...along with 4 steel "straps"--one on each side. The straps would go below the decking and get lag screwed to a frame of 2x10's.

For anyone worried about the weight...The deck is 2x12 beams and 2x10 joists an 12" centers...

Thanks.

Are these posts going through the deck to the ground / footing? If not you may not get 200# of lateral force. I would fill with concrete / mortar and probably not use rebar.

These posts will end on the top of the deck.

Hmmm.
I'm wondering if it might be easier to frame up the interior of the columns instead of using masonry. Then you can make sure it is part of the deck structurally. And as far as the cultured stone - it would be a standard tar paper / metal lath installation. Something to think about anyway.
