OK, some of the areas I want to put cultured stone are the sides of 2x10's or 2x12's.

According to the instructions I need to put a weather barrier, and wire sheathing, then thinset and the stone...

Instead, I was hoping that cement board (Durock??) screwed to the lumber would be sufficient...

Any reasons why this won't work? Is their an "outdoor" version of cement board?

Thanks for all the help...

Durock is essentially already exterior grade. The only additional thing I may do is add some caulk between durock and adjacent materials (edges and seams).

i would suggest putting tar paper behind the durock. durock is only waterproof to an extent. it helps if you use type s cement also. it is much stronger than type n.
