Need Advice on Do It Yourself Service

I personally own an ice machine that needs refrigeration system maintenance.

Although I have always been a handyman type of guy with a background in electronics, computers, and mechanics, I have never ventured into HVAC refrig system repair. Now, after having been frustrated with small appliance and auto HVAC systems over the years, I am determined to use this ice machine project to learn how to repair a refrig system, and to acquire the necessary basic tools.

My intention is to perform maintenance ONLY FOR MYSELF on my own home appliances or autos.

To no avail, I have searched all over the internet for info on do it yourself refrig system repair. I am not interested in taking any extensive courses or reading any large, comprehensive how to books. I just want to find basic information on procedures, tools required, tool sources etc.

I am hopeful that someone can point me in the right direction to find what I am looking for. Any suggestions?

Probably the most difficult portion of refrigeration systems is getting a license to purchase and store refrigerant. I doubt that it uses the new stuff (can't recall name) which is supposedly easier to get.. the old R22 is supposedly pretty bad stuff. This is just my limited understanding though.
