View Full Version : weight rating for garage floor (psf)
what is a typical weight rating (pounds per square foot)for a 2nd floor residential garage? hillside development, one car. don
psf for live load, thanks
I could say around 20psf but it really depends on how it's constructed. It could only be 10 if it was never going to be used for storage or anything.. or upwards of 40 if it was going to be used for living space at some point.

Thanks rich I want to park a car in it and use it fot a wood shot. db
Ok.. I guess I misunderstood. You say 2nd floor - I assume that means it's wood framed or some type of concrete slab?
I was assuming you had a slab on grade for the garage and were looking to use the framed portion above it as some type of storage.

I cringe whenever I hear the words "second floor" and "garage" in the same sentence.
Spend a few bucks and have it engineered. It is more complex than just designing a floor system. Something has to hold the floor up too. Something has to restrain the lateral loads created by bringing a 6000 pound vehicle to a sudden stop or suddden acceleration.
I'm still unsure on if it's going to be built or it's existing too.
