The wood beneath my front door has started to rot. I want to replace the rotted piece of wood but I am worried that some integral part of the door frame will be compromised when I tear this piece of wood out. Since I don't know how the front door was constructed I am unsure if this is a simple repair I can do myself. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Tear it out and replace it with a pt board of equal size.

As RTF says, replace it with pressure treated of the same size. There shouldn't be any problem pulling the old wood out, but remember that your door threshold will be unsupported while you are working and don't put any weight on it.

Thanks! I have cut a piece of treated wood to replace it but wanted to get some input before tearing out the old wood. I didn't want to make a small problem bigger! Appreciate the input.

You'll probably have to put some wedges on top of the new wood to support the threshold, and fill any gaps with foam from a can. I should have thought of it earlier, but I was on the way out to work.
