We want to move one of the basement support posts in our basement. The distance is about 3 feet. There are two posts involved one will be an addition to maintain the distance between posts at 6 ft. What is the best way to do this?

current posts x---------X add post current post x---------X new post
stays 3ft 6ft removed 3ft

The best way to support the beam while moving a post is to support the beam with a temporary post (2-2x4). Then you can remove the original post and move it to where you want.

Depending on the type of beam you may need to consider splices. If you have a built up beam there are code requirement for how the beam is supported.

For example: if the built up beam (3 ply 2x10) were to have two of the 3 members splice in the middle of the span it may not meet code. Only one of the 3 members can join midspan the other two have to join over a support.

Clear as mud??
