I want to install a gas line to connect a BBQ to the main propane tank. The house runs on propane and tired of small cylinders running out. The run is approx 120' along side of house and then onto concrete patio. I am told I need to bury the line 18" using 1/2" epoxy coated line. This stuff is expensive and curious if I can use plastic line or if metal pipe is best. Can I use the existing regulator from the small cylinder? What else do I need to know here? Where do I put the cut off valve, etc? Thanks for any input.

At least in my area, running propane underground to a gas grill is not allowed, in any way, shape, or form. It was 'outlawed' about 20 years ago. Maybe someone from your area can help, if it's allowed there.

Here you "can" have an underground propane line to a grill, but you have to purchase the grill from your propane supplier and have them install it.

At 120', 1/2 " copper isn't going to get enough gas to you're grill,
unless you're running high pressure(10#'s) to it. This require's a high pressure regulator. What's hooked directly up to your house is low pressure, about 1/2#. They are NOT interchangeable!
At low pressure you'll need 1/2 iron. 3/8 copper will carry the load
with high pressure, but I haven't seen it sold in more than 100' lenghts
(not a good idea to bury flare connections)
Contact your gas supplier and have them run high pressure to the grill
regulator, with a shut off before the regulator, and a flexable rubber hose so can fkeep the grill the required 3' min. from combustables.
lines need to be buried 12" if you won't be driving over them. If you will be, then it's 18". But that's NFPA 54, your local codes may differ.
Definetly check with your gas supplier .

We could do it up here, I believe but you are down there and that's what counts. Up here we can silver solder copper tubing together for long runs.
