I am a 28 year old workin in my fathers business. I want to be involved more in the business, and I am charged with finding a business plan that would satisfy all in volved. a little about our business we have 2 foreman most of our jobs consist of New homes, condos, Large additions, and are looking at building an office building. I do 95% of the trim work for our company is it feasable to introduce a lead carpenter system in our company? I want to get more involved with the ins and outs of working with customers maybe a little bidding. My father isn't ready to hang it up quite yet but i still want to be involved ith sales handling subs and such so that when he does decide to hang it up I will be up to the challenge of running a construction company. we also have a little info on the net at jungconstruction.com
I think the lead carpenter system is an excellent approach to project management. The biggest problem with this system is that the existing employees don't realize the added responsibility they have. A training class on the system is highly recommended. Above that is the office needs to know what information the field needs to receive. Other areas of concern are when a job makes or loses money on certain portions the problems or good things should be reviewed with the lead carpenter.
Many times the carpenter is the only company employee on the jobsite so they need to know how to get materials quickly and efficiently. If that's setup through a P.O. system from the office or if it's run directly from the field.
These are just some of the things that need attention to make a successful implementation of the lead carpenter system.
Good luck and let us know if you have any other questions.
Also - with the background of your father starting the associations and being a member of the associations you should have a better representation of the company on the internet. Of course that's just my opinion. If you need help on the design and / or implementation of a website let me know... I'd be glad to help out.
I'm not sure if that answered all your concerns...
