Does anyone know if I can use an "Old Work" Box for an island outlet or does it have to be new work?

Old workbox should be fine, and would be my preferred method for an island, I don't know of any technicality stating you can't use it - - or anywhere else.

It's an electrical box that has 'wings' on the back instead of nails on the side. You cut your box-sized hole through your drywall (or in this case your cabinet side), then you just tighten two screws at the opposing corners and they pull the wings 'in', till they grab hold onto the back of your wall surface.

They're often referred to as "retro" or "retrofit" boxes also.

to meet code unless I can come up with documentation that specifically states re-work is ok.
