Hi --

My wife and I have decided to build a screen porch, and we know the area where we would like the screen porch, but we have a roofing dilemma.

Looking at the attached picture, we would like a (13' wide x 18' out) screen porch to be on the right side of the back of the house, where there is currently no deck. The problem is that for about 9 feet out, there will two sides of the house to deal with.

Question - would you recommend a shed roof, starting under the right two back windows, and gradually going downward? I'm guessing that would be a 2/10 or 4/10 roof.. If we did that, one side of the shed roof would be butted up against the house for about 9 feet..

In the attached picture I have *attempted* to draw what we are looking for, but sadly, I am no artist. But I think you might understand what I am asking.

Do you think a shed roof is the right approach? Any other ideas?

Any response would be helpful.

Thanks,

Kevin

Hi Kevin,
I don't see the attached image. Can you try again?

EDIT: nevermind, see it now!

I do think that the shed roof you drew is the best idea in practical terms. A gable roof may look nice but would be slightly harder to construct and waterproof.

If you go with the shed roof you run the least risk of problems. If you go with the gable roof you may have a challenge water proofing the pocket area so you don't have a water fall into your house.

I recommenda 4/12 pitch. Anyhthing less than 3/12 and you shouldn't install shingles.

Hmm.. A 4/12 pitch might not work if I want it to go out 18 feet..

What kind of problems would I have if I did a 2/12 pitch?

Thanks,

Kevin
