My home was constructed in 1970. I am presently remodeling the main bath. I have removed the vinyl flooring and the 1/4" underlayment to prepare to lay a new vinyl floor. I also had to remove the 1/2 inch particle board underlayment for about 3-4 ft out from the tub , including the toilet area due to water damage. There is 3/4 Plywood subfloor under this that appears sound. I really don't want to replace this removed area with particle board. I would think 1/2 in OSB would be the better that 1/2 inch plywood but don't really know. Is there any problems with OSB ? such as will screws for the toilet ring hold well in OSB, etc. The whole bath area will then be covered with 1/4 in underlayment to install the vinyl on.
Appreciate any advice on materials or anything else :D .
Thanks
Butch

Stick with the plywood. It may never happen but if you have future moisture problems around the tub/toilet then the OSB will breakdown much faster. The plywood also provides better grip for the closet flange screws but the should penetrate into the sub-florr anyway.
