Many places do not require a permit to build a deck (as long as it's under 30" in height) but when you add the roof on I believe that's where the permit is required. Anyway - that was pretty much useless information :D . I'll see if I can put together a drawing for you. Should cost around $150.. just kidding. I believe if you have a section through the whole thing with a plan view of how it is being supported you should have no problems. What slope is your current roof at and how big do you want the deck itself?

Umm what deck?! you mean the front porch/patio? I guess that could be considered a deck. The roof framing is something I could help you with because it's something my company does regularly. The patio part is another story.

Here is how I would tackle the roof project. I'd measure the length of the house, I'd figure how long you want the over hang and draw a sketch from the arial and side elevations.

Now we need to figure your rafter distance so we can determine how many rafters we will need to install, and how much wood to purchase. This can be done by pulling off some fascia, or maybe peeling up gutter flashing.

Depending on code, you might be able to build right ontop of your existing roof without cutting anything. I know I have seen it done before, but I suggest you cut the roof and roof substrate/deck down to the rafters. Cut the end of your new rafters all at the same angle and set them ontop of your existing rafters for maxium load capacity.

There is a ton more to explain but I'm too lazy!

Oh yeah, youa sked about permits. Best advice is print that picture and make a trip to your city/village hall. I know the City of Chicago has a program where if you are a home owner you can have the city architects do all the prints for you for free!

Well First of all...I'd like to say thank you...all of you. I posted this today...and didn't expect a replay so fast.

cr-admin- I will have to take the measurements… I’ll check it out tomorrow…HOW CLOSE DO I HAVE TO BE?
A Drawing!!! Great…if you want to charge me something for your time…I can send it with PayPal.
I know a permit is required… I live in Suffolk County New York… you have to have a permit to spit.

How big do I won’t the “DECK” Porch… I don’t know what the standard is…But I’d say about 4 feet.

Now Grumpyddasmurf…Yes yes I guess it is a porch…If that’s the biggest mistake I make on this project….Life will be wonderful….lol

I will be selling this house in the next 3 years… time to plan a way out on NY… so code will determine how I proceed. I will get up in the attic and count the rafters. But cutting away the roof and roof substrate ( I guess that’s the plywood ontop the rafters) really doesn’t sound to hard.

How do I find out what is in code and what is out? I will take your suggestion and stop down to the Town Building Division with the pic’s…to see what they offer.

Is matching the roof hard to do? Do you think the roof that’s up has discolored? It’s about 4 years old.

As far as being lazy… We have time.. it will take me about 3 weeks to gather all the information I’ll need to take this on. I’ll post a Pic of my house as it is..so you all can see it.

Chris

As far as size and measurements go - if you are within an inch or 2 it'll be fine. I don't want to draw something that won't get passed through permit review because it's not accurate.

So you are thinking from face of wall you will have 4' under roof and a 2' overhang possibly? I'll be honest 4' is not all that big if you are thinking of having people on it and some patio type furniture. Of course it's your decision on how big it should be for your needs.

Let me know.

I think 6' would really be a minimum comfortable outset. I actually looked around today as well as measuring my Dad's porch, his porch is 9'. He built it himself, like many things on his house so nothing about his house is standard.

Roofing shingles... I can't say if it will be hard to match but one thing is for sure more than half the shingles on that slope of the roof will be removed so just to be ultra safe, replace all the shingles on that side of the roof. This way you know they match and nobody will notice since you can never see both sides of a gable roof except from a birds eye.

Please post before during and after pics of your project. I'm interesting in following your progress.
