I suppose I should introduce myself, that way I won't need to explain why my questions my seem like I am out of my mind. I am a science teacher in NW Pa and my wife and I decided to build a house. We have ten acres that we are working with out in the country. We just finished months of permitting for our septic (that was not fun) and I am finishing an unattached garage from this past summer. That was my first major project and the thing is still standing and it almost looks like we knew what we are doing. I have to admit the first time the cement truck showed up it was not the most organized experience, but we gave the driver a few laughs. Anyway all that I know now comes from 6 contruction books I have read and all the contractors around here that I bug for free advice (one's my neighbor and the other is one of my assistant coaches). I have to say, don't worry about the forum being underused, I have more questions than I can remember so I hope to keep you busy in the comming months! :D
That's great. Welcome to the forum - more than happy to answer anything you've got.

Ahhh a taste of the permiting. Building dept's suck, OSHA sucks more.
When it comes to roofing or siding feel free to ask me.

We spent 6 months on this septic permit. At first we did not pass for a standard system or sand mound because our soil horizon only had 15 inches of good soil (need 20). So we had this alternate system designed that uses UV light to cook the effluent, pricey, but the least pricey of all the options. We thought we were there this summer, but then we found out that in 1979 when they subdivided the land into 10 plots, no one ever did sewage planning for the DEP. So I wound up completing a planning module for the entire division like I was a developer(Otherwise I would have had to pay a consultant 1000.00 dollars for the permit, I figurd my biology degree should be good for something). Man that was an education the hard way.
That's a bummer. Like you said at least you got to use your education. :D
