Hi all,
First off let me say as someone not involved in the industry, this site has been invaluable for giving me ideas on managing the building process of my own home.

I decided after looking for 6 months at homes that the only way i'd get a house I was satisfied with would be to build it myself, and I figured managing this process shouldnt be any different than the project management work I do now.

I havent been able to find a good schedule or building checklist that I can use as a general process flow for the construction. I've read through a few different books on it , but was wondering if theres a simple guide/tool that you guys use as a rule as to the order you have the work done, something that includes the details such as indivudual finishing steps and details of the rough-in work.

Any recommedations would be appreciated.

I put together a typical schedule awhile back for a design build project.. some of the activities could switch around depending on what you would want to do but it's generally pretty typical.

I would add a few things in.

Namely, ordering times.

Trim, Cabinets, Garage doors, windows, etc... often need to be ordered in advance. In this area for many materials one month lead time is needed.

I consistently have this problem with one of my builders.

Greg, when is the cabinet shop bringing the cabinets?

Oops.

Greg, when are the doors going to be delivered?

Oops.

Greg, where are the garage doors?

Oops.

Typically I put together a decision matrix as a fragnet to the schedule for ordering items to the owner/architect. Select this trim profile by this date or the schedule is impacted. And if I don't do that I'll do a delivery matrix where essentially it has the item, a need by date, a timeframe for submittals and approval, and a manufacturing duration.. subtract all that from the need by date and that's the drop dead date to make the selection and also gives the order date.

I would add a few things in.
