Hi,
The subject above is the long description for the project my fiancee and I have embarked upon. The shorter name is "Project YIPPEE". We are building three yurts on 147 acres in Newfane, Vermont. For health reasons, we have to utilize a number of alternative materials and methods to get this done. Unfortunately, we think winter is going to get to us before we can relocate, but we are ever optimistic.
Anyway, the whole story is located at http://www.chriscouture.us/yippee - if you have some time to kill take a look.
Cheers!

Y'know, we get that a lot :) Visit http://www.yurts.com - this is where we are buying our yurts from. A yurt is a giant tent. They have been around for centuries. The modern version has much more structure to it than those used by nomads wandering the desert.
So what do you plan to do with your Yurt?

Live in it, of course. It will be our year-round home. Full story at http://www.chriscouture.us/yippee/

Won't it be a little cold in the winter? It doesn't seem too insulated.

I hope it stays nice and toasty. We met some folks who have been through six Vermont winters in their 30' yurt and have had no problems. They were using a wood stove, then added a propane space heater so they could leave w/o having to worry about the place freezing up. We are going to employ a external wood furnace and radiant floor heating since at least one of us will always be home, at least for the next few years. Might have to come up with something on down the road to accommodate travel schedules a bit more.

Sounds good, radiant heat floors are a great way to go. I'm planning to use an active solar radiant heated floor in my earth bermed home I'm designing. Good luck with your project!

Thanks! Its quite a lot of work and, frankly, we are so pressured that we aren't getting to enjoy it as much as we like. The web site gives us a chance to share and be a bit creative (well, so does the design) and we know it will be very cool when all done. One step at a time. Likely I'll have a few more posts on here as we go on; I can do all of this stuff but it isn't my main profession.
Cheers!
