What would the best method of startup/venture capital be? Should I contact local banks? Of coarse I have my own funds on hand but I want to do things right instead of suffering for a few years.
With a good market analysis and a business plan coupled with experience that can be proven .. it should be no problem getting a loan from a bank. They are probably the best resource. You may be able to contact the Small Business Association and get more sources from them.

SBA loans only kick in if you have been declined by more than two banks. I've checked out the sba website a few times. I have a partially made business plan and a half made marketing plan.
My experience can be proven both by resume and the pic I have of me at age 5 with a hard hat and sledge taking down a wall. Think that counts?
I say "I've 22 years experience in the remodeling industry."
They say "But sir you are only 27 years old."
and then I say "So?"

I would say that counts :D
I still remember going down to the jobsite with the old man at 2 in the morning checking the winter protection and heaters.
