best case would be 5/8" plywood - OSB is a cheaper alternative but will work.

OSB is certainly viable - was only stating best case :)

It's acceptable but not preferred.

What centering is to be used on the rafters? 16"? 24"

What pitch? 4? 12?

What loads need to be considered? Snow? Ice?

16" o/c , 6/12 pitch, new york snow loads...dont know specifics. i know builers use it, i was just considering it because i want to keep costs down .

I don't care for using osb on anything under an 8/12 pitch, myself.

Figure out how much decking you are going to need for your addition.

Price OSB, then price a better quality plywood. Figure out what the difference in price actually is and make your decision based upon that $ amount.

Also consider that plywood will hold up better than OSB if it gets wet before you get the roofing felt (or similar) laid down (especially now that summer is officially over).
