We are having a wood patio cover built. There are four 4 x 4 posts with 4 x 6 crossbeams. I noticed the wood has split in various spots on some of the posts and crossbeams. I was told this was normal by our builder. I don't think it is. Am I right to think these pieces should be replaced? One split on a post looks like it goes through from one side to the other. what damage, if any, can result from not replacing the wood?

Splitting to some is checking to others. Unless you can post some pictures, you'll have to make your own judgement on whether the split is significant enough to be structural. It's probably not as bad as 2 2x4 studs I received a couple weeks ago. There was a sap layer running through them, going the entire length of the boards. I was able to split both of them in two pieces with my bare hands. :) Not exactly what I would want holding up a wall...
