I was wondering what other parts of the country are getting for custom drawn plans?

Depends on who I'm going through. 3-5 is what I typically say.. $3-5 / SF and/or 3-5% of contract value.

Rich, I would assume those prices are for architects. If not, then I am packing my bags, moving to the States and starting a home design business. All I have to do is figure out your money - its all the same color!

LOL.. yes for an architect. My friend does it quite a bit cheaper than that but if an arch isn't already on board I'll use those numbers for a basis of estimate.

Here in Houston, building designers charge $1.50-$2.00 /ft to builders, $3.00/ft and up to individuals.

Architects? Another answer.

if we are to build (or general) the house, we charge nothing....if we are not going to build the house we charge $2.00 a sq/ft and $100.00 a copy. Sounds like I have been giving my work away compared to......

That's about where we're at now too. We made the jump to a preconstruction contract last year - where if we design and you give us the job the design is free. If you don't give us the job we charge in that 2.50 / sf range.

I was never that fond of design work, but after I bought into the business and have slowly started to work more with clinets and plans, I have enjoyed it, more than pounding nails, no, but it is still a nice change. I am sure the plans that we draw are less detailed than some of yours, but if we draw them, we know that they are going to work, it is so fun to watch the drawing change into a house.
