I was looking over my building plans and I came across something that didn't make sense. I am building a standard Cape Cod, 32x34 with a shed dormer on the back. When I look at the second floor framing plan, it calls for a LVL (1 3/4 x 11 7/8 ) to run the length of house perpendicular to the trusses in the attic (it speciffically says attic on the plans). There is a bearing post on the plans and the floor plan at this point makes total sense. Then comes the side cutaway view of the house. There is no detail on how this LVL should be in the attic. The roof is constructed with modified trusses 12:12 to 3:12 on the back(shed side). What seems even stranger is that as a 12 inch piece of stock(LVL), how in the world could I set my trusses in the proper position? Could this be for extra support since the truss is not a standard shape? A vestigage of the old plans that had a rafter framed roof? Any thoughts?

I would say it's left over from the hand framed plans - most likely a ridge beam.
