I am looking at redoing the door and window trim in my home to the Arts and Crafts style. Using a top cap, crown, a frieze board and a crosshead strip and fluted casing. Some of the plans suggest 5/4 stock. Is this available similar to 1X stock or will it be a special order item? Would it be just as well to use 1x stock?
thanks

5/4 stock should be readily available, definitely at your lumberyard, and very possibly at HD or Lowe's. Using 1X would look too 'cheap'. The other option would be 1X with 'built-up' edges, trading off labor for cost, but of course, more labor-intensive if your finish product will be stained rather than painted.

In other words, say you're working with a 1 X 6 (which measures 3/4" X 5 1/2"), - - on the backside perimeter of your piece you would attach say, strips, that would measure 1/4" X 3/4", giving your 1 X 6 the 'appearance' of being 5/4 X 6 (1" X 5 1/2"). It will end up leaving the edges all 1" thick and the remainder of the piece 'hollow' in the back. To attach them just glue, clamp, and then sand. More work, - - less cost.

use the 5/4.
its easier and better to work with than jimmy-rigging 1x

5/4 stock is usually unplaned and it is 1 1/4" think. 5 quarters of an inch. It isn't a lumberyard term. It is a sawmill term. When a tree is sent through the mill it is originally cut to 5/4. It is then planed to dimensional sizes.
1-by stock is a dimensional size that is planed and is actually 3/4" thick.
Yep 5/4 is usually 1-1/16" when purchased planed. If I'm doing my own work I'll buy everything rough and plane it down to what I need. This

was purchased 8/4 unplaned and whittled down :)

Dragon, if he gets 5/4 from a HD or Lowes it will be 1 1/16". If he was to 'jimmy-rig' it himself that number would be 'irrelevant', - - 1" would be fine. And though I agree, of course, it's much easier just to purchase the 5/4 to begin with, I gave him the 'option', beings he alluded he may not be able to find it.

Yes. The Lowes and Home Depot here don't carry it. TBH I don't care much for their quality when it comes to wood products.
You can find 5/4 through other sources here but it is always unplaned.
