Fall application of exterior paint

I have a question about applying paint in the fall here in the northern climate. The paint recommends applying when surface and air are above 50F. Is this a recommendation that I should try to follow pretty closely? Also, What if it is 50 during the day but cooling into the 30s at nite. Any advice or horror stories around painting exterior when it is starting to be cool.

I have applied paint times when the temperature at night got below 50F. I've never had any problems. I have also painted when the temperature, at the time, was less than 50F. It takes longer for the paint to dry, but I've never had any problems.
