Hi! My husband and I have just started a new business in Ca. ( tile contractor). Were having a hard time estimating. We dont know what average cost are for labor/ mark up as well. I know this is a general question but does anyone have any experiece in tile and what contractors may charge per sq/ft. Or would you charge piece work?

Thank You

Only you know how fast you can lay tile. Once you get a good idea of how fast you can install it you can get a better idea of a sf price. You should also distinguish between small tile (more time) and large tile (less time).
For instance - lets say you can install 100sf in 2 hours. That gives you 50sf / hr. And let's say you want to get paid 25 / hr. Divide $25/50sf = .50 / sf for labor. Now lets assume we are bidding 1000sf of tile.
1000 * .50 = $500 for labor
Lets assume material cost is 1500.
2000 subtotal - add profit and overhead. Typically 15-25%. This can be done many different ways -
add a material markup (for handling) and then add profit and overhead. Add profit and overhead without material markup.
