My mind is always thinking of ways to make money... What would the ethics be in starting a non-competing company while I keep my current job as an employee of another company?

I don't see a problem with a non-competing company. Many companies will have a non-compete clause but I believe most of those clauses state a competing company. It would be a different issue if you are taking information from your current company and bidding against them.

The only problem I could see is if your non-competing company was in a position to make bids to competing companies, that might trickle down to the company you workfor not getting the lowest bid. For instance I like to give my Dad a heads up on jobs my company bids with a lot of EFS. My company does steel therefore the company my Dad works for isn't a direct competitor. But if they bid to another GC than we do, and that GC gets the job, it could possibly trace back to me. I keep things lowkey if I let him know about something. Most likely it will never be a problem, but never a bad idea to watch your back.
