Hello,

We have an side exterior door that opens to the inside of the room. My wife is wanting it to open outward. Is this as simple as pulling the door, swamping and reversing the hinges to the other side of the jamb and re-creating the lock area on the other side of the jamb? Any information on such a task?

Thanks in advance.

I would suggest against that - mostly for security reasons. By opening the door to the outside you expose the bolt of the lock to easy break-in. I would even say that many places even have codes on it for just that reason.
Now having said that - to do it you will need to run the mortises through for the hinges - so the way that they sit right now - the hinge pin also needs to move to the other side of the door. It definately won't look good as you'll see where the hinges were - you'll need to paint it or somehow protect it from weather.

I understand your security issue . .the current door is out to a deck that will become an enclosed space . .thus actually making the current exterior door and interior door. Perhaps I should have mentioned that . but none-the-less, I think I understand your instructions. Thank you for your time.

How old is this door?

A lot of exterior (especially steel) doors these days have jambs that are thicker on the outside than inside, creating the doorstop in the process. There are also threshold considerations.

Spin the whole jamb around and you're done.

Again, threshold.

You need an outswing jamb with reversed threshold or flush threshold to do that.

Threshold becomes a non-issue.

If you want a little added security, pick up a set of hinges made for outswing doors. They have a set (grub) screw to lock the hinge pin in place.

Maybe if you remove it... Its an esthetic issue, really.
