Hey all, I'm new to the board. I gotta vent. My neighbor's sewer kept plugging up so he had to have it dug up and replaced. Well come to find out our houses are connected to one line that then feeds to the street all on his property. Our water service is the same way. Anyway this jerk contractor quoted him $4400 to run a new sewer line from his house to the main in the road, maybe 70' total. The contr. told me he would just Y my line into the new one even though he wasn't supposed too. I said all I know is I don't have a problem now and I don't want one. That was the last thing said to me about it. Only now after several trips outside to check things out and snap a few pictures I can see that two sewer lateral were ran to the main and hooked up seperately. Also a new water line was ran, in the same trench mind you, and tapped into my side of the old line to seperate it from my neighbors. That's all great, but not cheap! I know my neighbor has the right to say he dosen't want my utilities on his prop. That's fine, but I should of been told about the situation. The contractor should of given me an estimate or something. Which I would not have hired anyway. I have access to a backhoe, laser, chop saw, and everything else. It would cost me half the price or less. The reason I'm mad is cause I talked to the neighbor and he said the contractor had no choice but to bill me. WHAT!!! Now what if I was a 75 year old widowed grandma who had been hearing machines running at the neighbors and had no clue of what was going on. Then a man knocks on the door handing her a bill for X amount of $. She would of had a heartattack, that's what. This is bull. Is this legal, where's my rights?

The city is involved, their the ones who did the tie ins to the sewer and water mains, and installed a new shut off valve for my new water line I know nothing about.

Just out of curiosity, do you have deeded access to your water and sewer lines? Some sort of easement on his deed in your favor? If not, what if you have a problem with your water lines and he decides he won't give you permission to dig on his property?

mjpliv, exactly!

Unless your utilities were deeded to run on your neighbors property, you have no rights. The neighbor/contractor could have simply dug your line up to the property line and capped it off on your side and left you with a non-existent sewer/water service.

In any case, once the city inspectors saw what was there they probably mandated that the lines be run separately.
