I am remodeling my basement. When I was ripping out the old terribly built false walls I uncovered the drain pipe from my upstairs bathroom. This 5 1\2in pipe is 3 1\2 feet away from my basement wall right in the middle of the room. Moving this pipe is out of the question.

I would like to install a vent free fireplace with glass on both sides so we can see through between this pipe and the basement wall. It would look awesome and hide this eyesore. Living in the Chicago area the pipe is of coarse cast iron. Is this against any rules? How close can a vent free fireplace be to this pipe?

What covered this pipe before was a little bar between a boxed out pipe and the wall...it was ugly.

Thanks in advance for all your help!

Mike

Those types of pipes were very common in older type houses. In fact it was the only thing they used until plastic pipes started to come in the 1960-70's.
Do you really want to use a vent free gas appliance? In lots of juridictions they are illegal except in a garage application. They also produce lots of moisture which is something I don't think you want in a basement in Chicago.
