My house was built with a full basement, with the plumbing for a bathroom already in place--there is a drain for a tub, toilet and sink buried in the concrete. There is a pipe sticking out from the ceiling for the vent and the water supply is near by.

I want to construct a bathroom without moving any pipes. I've been told that I might have to move some, but the easiest plan is to work around the toilet and move smaller pipes if I have to.

Question: How far from the center of the toilet pipe (the one in the floor) is the drywall supposed to be?

Several different dimensions depending on what type and the manufacturer. But pretty standard is 12" from drywall to centerline - I've also seen 15" in some of the Toto models.

I should also say - that's on the backside of the toilet. Side to side I think UBC calls for 18" from centerline to wall or cabinet.

Thanks for the reply! I will go with 12in from center to drywall because I won't be buying a fancy toilet.

12" will work, but I would suggest going 12 1/2". It will allow room for say, ceramic tile walls or beadboard wainscoting if you ever decide to do it later.

I always go 13" from framing to center.

Thanks for the tips. I ended up with 12.5 inches. I was constrained by where the existing walls were--and I did not want to move walls. For photos, visit

Let me ask something else. When I went to one of the large home centers to buy a bath tub, I had to wait for a dude with a forklift to get me it for me. I waited by sitting on a $500 toilet.

What makes a toilet worth $500?
