Yet another Hip Rafter question...

I understand that the hip rafters must either be dropped or beveled for them to be the correct height. I would like to bevel mine. Can I just bevel it by making two 45 degree cuts? Will this work out correctly?

My roof will have a 7/12 pitch.

Thanks again!

Preston,

You can't bevel it by 45°. Every pitch has a different bevel. If you choose to bevel it for your 7/12 roof the bevel on the hip would be 20.87° or 21°.

Why not just drop it 5/16" if your using a 2x for a hip. Why bevel it?

If you do want to bevel the hip rafter, the saw blade angle setting for two 7/12 pitches, where the eaves meet at 90 degrees, is 20.87256 degrees (4 9/16 over 12).

Good luck! I have yet to find a saw that will cut to five decimal places. :D

I was thinking about beveling the hip, because I thought it might give me a better nailing surface for the sheathing. Dropping it 5/16" sure sounds a alot easier though!

How do you determine the drop (for future reference)? And I assume that I just make the seat cut 5/16th deeper and the top of the hip rafter will be 5/16th below the top of the ridge board?

I am using 2x6s for the commons/jacks and 2x8s for the hips (if that makes a difference).

:) thanks for everything. This forum has been a great help to me on this project. I have not built any roofs before now.

Preston,

If you want to figure the hip drop when the hip runs at 45° you can do this for your 7/12 Roof.

(Pitch/16.97) x (Half Thickness of Hip)

7/16.97 = .412493 x .75 = .309369" or 5/16" (Hip Drop)

There's a few ways to figure the drop. One way is to layout the Birdsmouth with the seatcut and the H.A.P. cut (Heigt above Plate) and come in towards the top of the plumbcut at the ridge 1/2 the thickness of the hip and draw another plumb line or H.A.P. cut line and then measure down from the top the same measurement as the Common Rafter H.A.P. cut and then scribe your seatcut and that gives you your Hip Drop.

Another way to do it is to use the formula above layout your Birdsmouth with the Seatcut and H.A.P. subtract it from whatever the Common Rafter H.A.P. cut measures for example if measures 6-9/16" just subtract 5/16" and you'll make the H.A.P. 6-1/4" on the Hip.

Dropping the hip worked great! Came out just right and the sheathing fit perfectly. Thanks for the help!
