My "Deck and Roof" project is coming along nicely (thanks to this forum!)

My deck roof is a 7:12 hip roof that meets my 7:12 house roof at a right angle. I am ready to cut the sheathing that will fit up to the valley that is formed from the addition of the deck roof.

My question is: How (what angle) do I cut the sheathing to fit into the valley? Would it be the same angle that I cut the sheathing to fit on the hip?

If memory serves me right (I don't have my little Swanson Blue Book with me) I made a mark at 3' 5 3/8" from the edge and cut a diagonal line from there to the corner. Is this the same angle that I should cut for the valley?

I had a similar 'problem' when I had to sheath out my four dormers. Many angular pieces. My solution: just cut them based on the measurements. It only takes a couple seconds, and there's no head-scratching involved. :)

When the pitch for all of the roofs are the same the sheathing angle for the hips and valleys are also the same. In your case the angle for the valley is the same as the hip because the main house pitch is the same. If the house pitch was different the angle for the valley would also be different.

Nice rendering Preston!!!

Thanks! I'll have to post a real picture so we can compare how close I came to my "drawing"!

Joe: Thank-you! That will save me a lot of time (and wasted sheathing  )! I wasn't sure how I was going to cut the sheathing to fit the valley!

The miter and bevel angles for cutting roof members can be applied to cutting more than sheathing. Even SIPS several inches thick can be cut accurately. If the sheathing or SIP runs in the direction of the rafters, apply the rafter cutting angles, if parallel to the ridge line, like purlins, use purlin cutting angles.
