Hypothetical question: If you were given $300 to spend on a table say (and ABSOLUTELY no more) which saw would you buy and why? Generally, where are the best deals to be had?

A friend and client has asked and I thought I'd get some other opinions. Without spending much time comparing prices and the like... HD has a Makita 10" portable table saw for $300.

You can't buy a table saw that will last for $300.00

I've tried.

I'd hunt for a used saw in the classifieds. A Craftsman or a Delta that has been taken care of.

I have two 'cabinet' saws in my shop, a 'Jet' and a 'Delta Uni-Saw, - - but they run about $1700 each, - - that said, I do carry a Makita 10" portable table saw in my cube van at all times, - - and comparatively speaking, - - I find it to be a great saw (for something portable), - - smoothe running and great power. Dragon's advice is best though, if you can find something. Check www.woodweb.com (machinery exchange), - - you might find something in your area.

I agree with Dragon in practicality, but like I said, a client asked. She's looking for one for her father and has set this monitary limit (don't ask me why). I don't have the time or the desire to find something for her...

I admit that I'm spoiled; my father has a full cabinet shop behind his house in a large shop. I use his top quality tools when I need to make precise cuts and projects.

It all depends on what he's going to use the saw for. If it's for heavy use, then you guys are right.

If he just wants something he can use occasionally for light projects, then there are saws in that price range that will work.

I don't use a table saw all that often, but I have a Skil 10" that I've had for several years, and it's working like new. No complaints.

If I used it every day, I'm sure it would have worn out a long time ago.

There's a Makita 10" going for 301.98 at homedepot.com right now.

I got a used Bosch for $350 myself. It's about 5 or 6 hundred new. It's a great saw. My buddy just got a new Craftsman because his old one (about 30 years old) is not very portable. I don't like it. No vacuum port, and an extremely loud universal motor.

I have two Bosch saws. I use them when portability is handy. They are ok if taken care of, but will not stand up to everyday use. Expect to rebuilt them about once a year minimum. If you extend the table be very careful as the aluminum sliders bend easily.
