I'm constructing a detached shop behind my house and would like to add a bathroom.

How do I connect to the existing septic tank located about 6 feet from the foundation ? Do I tap into the existing input line or is there generally more than one input port that can be knocked out on a tank wall ?

I haven't dug up the tank yet so I'm not sure of the size , type , or orientation. This is an early 70's construction.

Stig,
I imagine that there is only one inlet for the septic tank. You'll probably have to tee into it. Generally, the septic line is pvc, and you use the designated tee for it. You might put a cleanout on that line also. I'm not sure if code requires it or not, but it might be a good idea. Since the line was originally laid in the 70's, I'm not sure what type of pipe used. You may have to use a couple of no-hub clamps to attach into the original line, but that shouldn't be too difficult. Hopefully, your original line isn't tile. That stuff is terrible to work with.

Thanks Dusty. I've looked into it a bit more. Looks like the only problem I'll have is getting to the existing input. The new construction is on the opposite side of the tank from the input... ugghh..
