Hi!

I'm a layman building a 14x28 workshop. 4-4x4 posts on each side sunk 3' deep, filled with concrete, leaving 9' above grade. Ceiling/rafter girts will be doubled 2x10's. I'm making my own gambrel attic trusses. Bottom chord Doug fir 2x6, the top and webs 2x4. Gussets 3/8" ply, glued and nailed both sides.

I could use some suggestions on setting the trusses. I plan on setting a plank on a couple saw horses to get me shoulder level with the top of the girt. I'll tip an end of the truss up on the girt on the opposite wall, set the other end up on the saw horse by the other wall; jump up on the horse, hoist end of truss up to girt. Truss hangs upside down. Have 2x's nailed temporarily on the outside of the end posts, sort of like knee braces, to stop the truss from sliding off the end or rotating past vertical.

Take a long pole or 2x4. Make a hole in the end of it. Tie rope through this hole and around ridge of upside down truss. Rotate truss to upright, resting against temporary knee braces. Maybe I could first tie a plumb bob to the ridge, so when it's rotated, I'll know where to stop.

That's about as far as I can get in my head. Not a long journey, but it takes awhile. So how do I nail the truss plumb? I won't have wall framing, but already have temporary skirts going around the bottom of the posts. Could put another up higher across the 14' at the end where I'll be placing the first truss, if I needed.

Look forward to your suggestions,
Danno
