View Full Version : "View posts since last visit" not working right?

The last few days (maybe a bit more since I hadn't been very active for a few days before that), everytime I post a new message or reply in a thread, that thread does not show up in the "View posts since last visit" search. And looking around, there are a lot of other posts that are quite new, that I've never seen before, that don't show up on the search either.

I know this isn't how phpBB usually works (I run a few phpBBs myself), and I can't picture it being a desired modification...

Interestingly, this is the first time it's worked right for one of my posts lately. Like taking your car to the mechanic and having it run perfectly while at the shop. :?

And then, after posting my first reply, it dissapears off the list of new posts.

And why wouldn't it disappear off new posts if you posted it? If you posted it - it almost a certainty that you've viewed it. :)

The one glitch I do have is that when viewing a topic the image is noted as unread - need to fix that.

Ok, right now, if I click on "View posts since last visit" I see the newest post listed as 8:18pm in the "Calculating HAPS" thread.

But if I scroll down the forum, I see that there was a post at 8:52pm in the "garage - cost estimates?" thread.

I've cleared out my cache, I've removed all cookies relating to this site and restarted my browser. I honestly think something isn't working right in the function on the forum.

Ok - but the one listed on 8:52 - have you read it?

Vector

No, I hadn't read the one that didn't show up.

The more I look at this, the more it looks like it's operating the way you are talking. When I view a topic, it goes away. Ones that I don't read hang on the list for days and days.

This isn't the normal behavior for phpBB. Is this something you've modified to be this way? It's disconcerting when I visit several phpBBs every day and one starts acting a lot differently than the rest.

I got nothin for posts since last visit, and it's been like 6 hrs.

Vector - yes this is the way I've modified it. I think it was Mj and some others that stated it would be nice to be able to keep unread topics active until they were actually read (like VBulletin) - in case you get interrupted and have to go onto something else.

I can't get two computers to login when I visit, and when I do they don't show any posts since last visit. My comp at work functions perfectly, but these two (at two different locations) don't work, even with dumped cache and deleted temp files. :?

Rich

That's because that computer hasn't logged in before. It doesn't have any posts since the last login from that computer.

I've been logging in with two computers and both have been giving me the posts I haven't read. I figured the data was being stored on the server-side. Even then, if it is how you say, then all posts have been unread on this comp. And when clearing cookies and temp files it should give me all posts as unread again. I've never gotten an unread list on this comp, even after dumping the cache and temp files a bunch of times. It still makes me login too, even when I check the box to do it for me. I just go through and try to figure the recents by date. :(

Either you have cookies turned off on that computer or it's something I can't recreate. I haven't been able to recreate any of the problems either you or Vector have been having.
Has anyone else been having any trouble besides the post image being always unread?

I'm not sure what's up. Everything is on default. This is my mom's comp, I don't think she messes with it at all, she just plays spider solitaire on it  I'll be back home tomorrow, I'll just ignore it, it'll go away :D

I apologize for the trouble - just don't know how to fix it if I can't recreate it.

For me, now that I understand what you've done, it does seem to be working correctly.

Whew.. ok.

I'm at work, it works fine. I'm not even going to try to figure my mom's computer out

Rich... I know you're a really busy guy... but for what it's worth, IMHO, I thought a feature that would be really useful would be to have the "mark all topics read" option available in the "view topics since last visit". That way, if you've read what you thought was interesting and you don't want to review the rest of the posts, you can mark the rest read and the next time you log in, you won't have the those posts to review.

... Just a suggestion, like I said, I don't even know if it is possible.

It's just a link.. I'll see if I can get that done.
Good idea really - funny it hasn't been done yet.

hey Rich, when i look at new post, some of them are shaded, like already read...

Rich
12-22-2004, 03:06 AM
Yes... until you update "Mark all forums read" it will not update you last visit time. So some of the ones you've read will show up as shaded.

but i didn't read them???

I was about to give up on it working on this comp. I messed with every setting I could think of. Just now, I didn't bother logging in and was looking just by dates. I clicked reply on one thread and all of a sudden I was logged in. I clicked on posts since last visit and I got a long list. I call this computer voodoo.

No, i like it. It works fine for me.

giddonah

me too, I like it. It only works for me at work though, for some reason my home comp won't remember my login for this site, but it will for others :?

Cole

Did you bookmark the site in your folder?

giddonah

hmm. Not on my home comp I guess. I'll try that when I get home. I thought I was pretty savvy, but I never would have guessed that.

Cole

lol, try it and then tell me if it works.

giddonah

I don't get it. I was just about to add it to my favorites and see if it worked, and it already worked. I changed nothing, but now it works. Go figure.
