I noticed in one of the previous posts Grumpy mentioned gutter flashing, where and how is this applied to a house?

Gutter flashing, is L shaped. Prebent gutter flashing is 2" on one side 3" on the other. It is about 10' long.
Gutter flashing is installed before you install your gutter brackets. The flashing is tucked under the shingles and starter coarse of shingles. Typically you want it to be over the underlayment (felt paper or Ice shield).
When you install the gutter brackets, this holds the flashing in place. Gutter flashing is a necessary step for any gutter system, without it backup is immenent.
The installation process is different for a flat roof.

I think I have used this, does it also go by the name of "drip edge"?
I don't believe drip edge has the downturn on it - but I could be wrong. :D

Drip edge is used when gutter is not. Drip edge has a bit of an extension that "carries" the water away from the fascia.
Outside Drip Edge loks more like a T, while gutter flashing (gutter apron) looks like an L. I've seen drip edge used for gutter flashing and it always has a very bad outcome.
