View Full Version : Valve placement for sewage ejector pump discharge side?

I am installing a sewage ejector pump for my full bath in my basement. I know I need a check valve and a gate valve. I also know the check valve needs to be installed horizontally.

Regarding the gate valve, can that be installed vertically? It would make the installation easier. I cannot see any reason why not, but wanted to be sure I was not going against code.

So, here is what I want to do:

From vertical discharge pipe of ejector basin, 90 degree bend, to check valve (horizontaal), to 90 bend, to gate valve (vertical), to main waste pipe using wye fitting entering at top.

Thanks

Gate valve? Check valve horizontal?

I will be doing my plumbing soon, and I also have a sewage ejection pump. I just bought a check valve (flapper type) at HD the other day. I don't see the need for the gate valve. I also don't see why the check valve would have to be horizontal. In fact, I'm planning on placing my check valve as close to the pump as possible, vertically, to reduce backflow when the pump cycles. I would then run my pipe, still vertically, to about 6" above my main line, do a 90 to bring the pipe horizontal, then join it to a wye which would be tilted up 45 from horizontal.

Anything wrong with that approach?

I only put the check valve in horizontally because it says it needs to be that way on the label. Mine is also from HD, though I agree that there does not seem to be any reason for it. It is such a simple device. As for the gate valve, I am installing that because I read somewhere that that is recommended, though, not required for ease of servicing. You can shut off any backflow and sewer gases for sure with it, plus you can clean/replace the check valve if needed. Though, again, nothing prevents you from doing all of these things without it. Just makes it easier.

But I am certainly open to advice from those who know. I am a first-timer to this kind of system.

We have the same thing on some of our check valves - needs to be installed horizontally for correct operation ... couldn't tell you why as I agree with sleepy - it seems so simple :)

I see.... Mine is for either vertical or horizontal operation. Guess I got lucky. :) I see your point with the gate valve. Can you get cheap 2" gate valves? The only ones I know of are brass, and a 2" would be fairly expensive.

BTW, if you need me, I'll be over in hardware. I just started working at HD on monday. We have a new store that opens Jan 20.

The 2" valve I bought at HD is PVC and cost less than $10 if I recall correctly. Maybe $6?

As for the HD you are working in, where is it?
