The unfinished bathroom has a floor of plywood and has a bout a 5/8" slope to it in 7' length. What's the best way to correct this (doesn't need to be perfect) so I can still install sheet vinyl flooring? Is leveling compound the best method and if so, how will the final finish of the leveling compound be? Thanks.

And I should add that no amount of jacking or lifting of the structure (2nd floor bathroom) would help because this floor has been sloping since the house was built over 30 years ago. Contractors took the money and ran before anyone was the wiser.

Short of removing the subfloor and shimming the joists - some type of leveling compound is what's needed. You may want to think about installing a thin layer of plywood over the leveling compound to give a good surface to attach the vinyl to. Don't know what this will do with your transitions.

I guess I wouldn't need the extra layer of plywood if I went with ceramic tile but was hoping for a real low budget job. Maybe shimming the joists is an option I'll look into tomorrow. Thanks.

I like to call stuff like that in my houses "character". They just don't build 'em like they used to! Like pulling up a floor to find 3" of shims on top of the joists :D

If you went the plywood route, you could use thinner stuff on the shallow side...

(just trying to justify my comment with some "help" )

I just did a bathroom remodel for a friend and had the same issue. Self leveling compound worked wonders. I then laid ceramic tile directly over it with excellent results. I seem to remember while reading the label that vinyl can be installed directly to it. If you choose this route make sure the self leveling compound is mixed extremly well. When i used it i had a few areas where there were small chunks of material sticking out of the surface. This was no big deal due to the ceramic but could cause prolbems with vinyl.
