I am considering buying a new build semi-detached house that is currently under construction.

I have heard that during the excavations for the foundations the holes filled up with groundwater. The contractor apparently excavated all the unsuitable soft material (to a depth of about 4m below finished floor level) and placed compacted layers of crushed rock up to foundation level. The foundations were cast in a concrete ring-beam.

An emergency overflow 100mm diameter pipe was installed at the edge of the foundations to carry any excess water should the ground water level rise.

Does anyone have any experience of foundations built on fill material? Will this provide a stable foundation?

Thanks
