I am planning to build a 12' or 14' x 27' hip roof over a patio. The roof will be attached to the back of the house. I have researched framing for the roof and have questions regarding two areas of construction.

I most likely will use a 4"x6" ledger board against the house and 4"x4" posts to support the roof structure. Would three posts and a 4"x6" beam be sufficient to support a 14'x27' roof?

My second question involves what I think are called the common rafters - the rafters that extend out from the center to the outside corners and attach to the fascia board From my research they appear to angle out 45 degrees from center. Due to the length of the roof I am unable to angle the rafters out 45 degrees. Do framers sometimes angle them out at less than 45 degrees?

I would appreciate any input. Thanks!

In my opinion no. Not enough structural support. Your beams down the sides would have to be massive to support 27 feet, especially if you get snow loads.

2nd question.

I think you are talking about the hip boards that go from your two outside corners to your ridge?

If they aren't 45 degrees then you have a bastard pitch. Meaning the end roof is different from the sides in pitch.

Dragon,
Thanks for your input. As a novice/intermediate do it yourselfer, I decided to make it easy on myself and build a flat roof for the patio with a slight pitch. I live in Hawaii so snow isn't a factor, but rain is. I still have many questions so I would appreciate any suggesions...

The dimension of the roof are again - 12' or 14' x 27. It will be 8-9' high.

Posts: would four 4x4 be sufficient?

Ledger board and rafters: I will space rafters 24 inches a part so can I get by with 2x6s for rafters and ledger baord, or will I need to go with 2x8s? The ledger board will be attached to the wall of the house. I know a lot of this is dependent on code and I don't know what it is at the moment. But would appreciate a best guess.

Beam: I will be either bolting two 2x6s or two 4x8 together and securing them to the posts with post/beam connectors. Can I go with 2x6s?

Bird's mouth: I will be using rafter hangers to secure the rafters to the beam. Since the pitch will be slight do I need to cut bird's mouth cuts into the rafters?

Roofing: I will be using 1/2" plyboard and asphalt shingles for roof. Does this present any issues?

Insection: I have read where flat roofs are inspector's biggest concern because of the leaking issue. Since it is for a patio roof and not for a room should I anticipate issues on inspection?

Thanks,
