I've found the following board foot estimator to be very useful http://www.woodbin.com/calcs/footulator.htm I've used it to get pretty accurate tallies of what I need to buy.

Thanks Rich, you did an awesome job on your calculator :D
I'm going to use yours for a while, I think I'm really going to like it.

I guess I didn't understand board ft. If the wood is 1/2" thick a square foot is only 1/2 board ft? If it is 2" thick, a square ft is actually 2 board ft?
Yep 1' of 2x6 is 1bf - you're probably entering a 1x6 at 1' and it's showing 1bf? The calculator rounds up to the nearest board foot. So for small pieces - it's going to show 1bf minimum.
I can change that if you think it makes a difference - my thought in doing that is you would typically round up when purchasing by the board foot. Or maybe I should state that in the calculator description.
