Maybe Grumpy can help me with this, but anybody's advice is appreciated. I'm putting shutters on my front side windows, but on the back, I'm planning on putting up wood trim. Can I trim the windows with 1x4 and then j-channel and butt the siding? Or do you skip the wood trim and just run the j-channel up to the window? I'm planning on running the j-channel around the windows in front and then applying the shutters. The windows protrude further than the j-channel and utility channel covers. Do I furr this out with something or not worry about it? Thanks for the help.

IMO - it's whatever you think looks best. As long as you provide the correct flashing around the window and top side of the wood trim you should haven't any trouble.

Thanks, Rich. I think I'll put 2x2 around the back windows. Someone else suggested that in another thread, and now that I think about it, that seems to be a good way to do it.

I agree with Rich on this one 100%. Either is acceptable.
You need adhesive flashing around the window. Also caulk where the J channel meets the window or meets the wood trim. The caulk would be installed first before the J channel so it is not visible and sits behind the J channel once installed.
Personally if I was installing wood trim around my windows I would cap it only because evertything else is maintenance free but your gonna have to paint the windows.

Thanks, Grumpy, and thanks for the reminder to caulk before the j-trim. I hadn't thought about that.
