Hello,

I have a 600 sq ft basement that I am remodeling. I was wondering if it might be possible to put a vent in the floor of the upstairs run a flex duct with a powerful inline duct fan and pull cooled and heated air into the basement--and let the air return up the stairwell. I live in Arizona and the ambient temperature of the basement stays around 70-85 degrees depending on whether it is winter or summer.

Would this be a good idea???

Thanks,

Kent

I don't see a problem with it as far as it's going to negatively affect anything. And you might as well utilize the naturally conditioned air.. not sure how much it's going to help though.

Install a return air grille as far as possible away from the furnace in the basement. Air takes the path of less resistance. The return air will cause the basement to become cooler from pulling it down the stairs. I have a family room in my basement. Here in Northwestern Indiana It is the warmest part of the home in the dead of winter. And remember - warm air rises. Cold air drops.

1. I have never seen a duct booster solve an air flow problem.

2. Comfort can't be guaranteed unless there is a thermostat on each floor. That can be done by zoning or two seperate systems.

You are correct duct boosters do not work that great, if at all. Fan blades are not designed to move air under static resistance.
