Hello. I have noticed in my basement that my bathtub has been leaking water out for quite sometime. Sometimes I have major leaks happen too. What is the cause?

Could be one of several things. Either the water supply is leaking or drain piping is leaking. The drain piping could be the easiest to check with a flashlight (that is if you don't have a hard lid ceiling) directly under the tub. It's either the trap itself or the overflow connection.
If it's the water supply you will need to (most likely) remove some drywall to get to the supply lines to see if they are leaking.

Oh I guess it could be the faucet or showerhead also. These are fairly straight forward to change. Check with your local home improvement store - they should be able to point you in the right direction for the replacement.

My bathtub drain is the kind that screws shut. It does not hold the water when shut. What can I do to correct this?

You'll probably need to look at replacing the rubber gasket or screwing out the whole top flange and replacing with a different type. The threads should be universal as to make replacement easy.

The wood was also rotten too. Would that have had to be replaced? If so, how?

Sounds like you're ready for a bathroom 'gut and remodel'. The money will be better-spent and you'll up your home value.
