I'm getting ready to install 12" ceramic floor tile in my 2nd floor kitchen on top of the existing laminent flooring. In short, my question is, can I install the tiles directly on top of the existing laminent flooring? I have a regular plywood subfloor plus 1/4" layer of Luon (sp?) underlayment, then the laminent flooring (so I have 1"+ of subflooring). I was told by a contractor that does this for a living that they now make a thinset that successfully bonds to laminent floors so I can apply this thinset directly to the laminent and then set the tiles. Plus he said that since I have more than 1" of subflooring the floor should be stiff/rigid enough for tiles. Would you agree that the floor is rigid enough and the proper thinset would work in this case? I really don't want to have to rip up the laminent and luon (sp?) and install cement backerboard if I don't have to. Thanks!
