LOL...I live in one...
Man, thats the truth it seems. Mind if I share a story?
We're building a house. We have never built anything before this, not even a single wall. I bought a housebuilding book and did right much research. My wife and I did everything from the footings to the walls ourselves, except the block work. Well block layer said our footings were perfect, the best he'd seen and that we may be in the wrong line of work. Hired my friend to sheath the exterior walls because of bad weekend weather and guess what, he said walls were perfect, some of the best he'd seen. Then we hired a builder to install the trusses, frame in the dormers, and sheath/paper the roof. This builder builds houses all around here and is incredibly in demand. He said our work looked great, very good, like we'd been doing this for years. Well his work looks like his framing crew started building houses that day! Nothing was perfect on center, ugly angle cuts, here a strong back there no strong back etc., we had to scab the bottom cords in places to lay the floor upstairs. These guys build everyday and they suck!

the word is competent. I am sure there is a few of you that can build out of your profession... but do not assume everyone can.... these days 2006... it is hard to find very good trades.... the key is to find the contractor that is on site teaching his guys. visit a site under construction or meet your builder on a project and look at how he works... a picture of what he does and how he acts towards his guys is worth a thousand words

I like "$2500 estimate" = "$4000 actual price"

"built to code" when I was a student every house you viewed was built to code - i.e. absolutely rubbish but just about legal!

On the beach where I am from build to code means buy inferior products and the code is optional because you can pay off your cousin who is the inspector.
